EDGEWATER — A new "poetry post" has popped up in Edgewater, showing off its literary chops with new works by famous authors each month.

Posted along a well-traveled path in the 1300 block of West Thorndale Ave., the route is taken by many walking to or from Senn High School, the Thorndale Red Line Station, Thorndale Avenue Beach or the many dark red brick two- and three-flats that line the street.

In July, a quote from Mark Twain's The Wit And Wisdom Of Mark Twain appeared, reading, "The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug."

In April, the poetry spot displayed Langston Hughes' April Rain Song, a short poem with a seemingly clear message ("the rain makes still pools on the sidewalk, the rain makes running pools in the gutter"), but one that many have speculated has a deeper personal meaning, like that of many of Hughes' works.

Both selections channel images familiar to many Chicagoans during a wet, soggy summer.

The post itself is stationed at an intersection surrounded by manicured front lawns busting with vibrant blooming flowers and protected by a canopy of bright, wide green leaves from trees above.
