OLD IRVING PARK — As cars roar overhead on the Kennedy Expressway, a band of volunteers will gather below to clean up the mess the highway creates in their neighborhood.

Ald. John Arena (45th) is organizing an effort on Saturday to sweep, paint and weed the Kostner Avenue underpass, which residents say is a magnet for litter and pigeon poop.

This weekend's event follows on the heels of a similar cleanup in May at the Pulaski viaduct.

To volunteer, simply show up at the Kostner/Kennedy viaduct at 9 a.m. Saturday. The alderman's office will provide the tools, but people are advised to bring work gloves if they have them. Streets and Sanitation power-washed the worst of the grime — pigeon excrement — in advance on Wednesday.
