HYDE PARK — Neighbors told police Wednesday night that a Tuesday night shooting was followed by another round of shots at 10:15 p.m.

A 19-year-old was shot in the shoulder at 7:52 p.m. Tuesday while sitting in a car on the 5200 block of South Drexel Avenue.

Neighbors told police at a Wednesday night CAPS meeting at Treasure Island, 1526 E. 55th St., that the shooting was followed by another round of shots at 10:15 p.m. at the outlet of an alley on 52nd Street just west of Drexel Avenue.

“The second round of shots happened right outside her window,” Jim Bloom said, pointing down to his infant daughter Lilia. “For something like this to happen was really unnerving.”

Bloom's wife, Kristena Lucky-Bloom, said she was up working late when she heard three more shots and saw men running toward the alley.

Police said the men involved in the shooting do not live in Hyde Park and were likely traveling through the neighborhood or using it as a temporary safe haven when a man in a car opened fire on the 19-year-old.

“We haven’t caught this person because the person shot that was isn’t cooperating with detectives,” Officer Denise Gathings said.

Gathings said there is a “war” in the Grand Crossing District immediately south of Hyde Park, and the incident could be related to groups that live south of the neighborhood and recent shootings north of Hyde Park in Kenwood, but detectives still are investigating.

Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) is hosting a meeting for neighbors concerned about safety on the block after the shooting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Renaissance Place, 5200 S. Ellis Ave.
