MOUNT GREENWOOD — Crews have started work on the new classrooms at Mount Greenwood Elementary School promised to the school by Mayor Rahm Emanuel after a tour in February.

Emanuel pledged $3 million to add six modular classrooms to the school at 10841 S. Homan Ave. According to Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th), the school is operating at 122 percent of its capacity.

The Southwest Side school had 1,060 students last school year. Its capacity is 870 students, O'Shea said.

The modulars are intended to address the rapid growth at the school, which O'Shea believes will continue to grow over the next couple years.

The additional classrooms will be built on the northwest corner of the school and is expected to open in time for the 2015-2016 year.
