UPTOWN — The Argyle Night Market is still happening despite heavy construction work on Argyle Street as part of the $3 million streetscape project.

The market, now in its third year, will bring local restaurants, shops and live entertainment to Argyle Street between Sheridan and Kenmore avenues from 5-9 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 27 beginning this week.

At a community meeting last week, Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) said the market would go on as planned even though construction crews would be tearing up Argyle Street all summer to transform it into Chicago's first shared street.

The market, he said, brings people to the neighborhood who might not usually go there, which aligns with the larger mission of the Argyle Streetscape.

Expect to see the following vendors this year: Tank Noodle, Phoenix Bean Tofu, Lyons Fruit Farm, Tai Nam Market, Caol Akiyama Jewelry, Beijo de Chocalat, North Garden, Paradise Products, Pho Viet, Ba Le, Hai Yen, Green Scene, Yoberri Gourmet and Heritage Bikes.

More vendors are expected to join the market in the coming weeks, including Empanada Argentina, Hon Kee Restaurant, Sun Wah BBQ, Sylvia's Backroom, Uptown Brownies, Sitka Salmon Shares, Bezazian Library and Avon Uptown, according to Uptown United, a community organization that helps put on the market.

Last year, the market drew roughly 800 people a week, according to Sara Dinges, president of Uptown United.

Construction on the Argyle Streetscape project, which started Monday, should last roughly a year. During that time, Argyle will be reduced to one-way traffic traveling eastbound. Crews will work in sections, beginning at Broadway and working eastbound.
