A Lot of Out-of-State Same-Sex Couples Get Married in Cook County

By Tanveer Ali | June 26, 2015 10:17am

CHICAGO — More than a quarter of all same-sex marriage licenses issued in Cook County are issued to those who come from other states, county officials said.

That's likely going to change now that the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in every state.

Marking the first-year anniversary of legal same-sex marriages in the county, the Cook County Clerk's Office released data in February about who was receiving such licenses.

As of February, more than 1,800 couples came from out of state to get married in Cook County. Of those, 319 couples came from Michigan, where same-sex marriage wasn't legal. Texas, Ohio and Missouri, all states where same sex marriage was illegal until Friday, also ranked high.

More than 7,500 couples had received same-sex marriage licenses in Cook County as of Friday, according to the Cook County Clerk's office.
