UPTOWN — Ald. James Cappleman is inviting Uptown residents to join him in fighting Noble Academy's proposed move to Buena Park.

A rally will be held at 6 p.m. June 22 at Uplift Community High School, 900 W. Wilson Ave., Cappleman announced in an email to constituents Wednesday evening.

Cappleman and other North Side aldermen are resisting the proposed move of the charter school from its Downtown location to the building at Irving Park Road and Lake Shore Drive previously occupied by Lycee Francais de Chicago.

The 46th Ward alderman said the charter school would "suck the lifeblood from our neighborhood schools" at a Chicago Public Schools hearing.

He and other North Side aldermen, principals and parents won a delay in the battle when CPS officials tabled the vote before the Board of Education's meeting the week before last.

But the Buena Park location is still in play.

"Every student in the 46th Ward and the city of Chicago deserves quality education in their neighborhood which is threatened by charter schools," Cappleman said in the email.

Noble officials said their 187 students would benefit from the move.

"It will better support the academic needs of our students," advocacy manager for Noble schools, Angelica Alfaro, has said.

The charter school was also interested in moving to St. Jerome Catholic Church, 1709 W. Lunt Ave. in nearby Rogers Park. But Noble withdrew that proposal earlier this week in the wake of fierce opposition.
