ANDERSONVILLE — In case you missed it, Andersonville turns 50 this year — and so does its signature street festival, Midsommarfest.

The fest, which kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday, has the same mission as those that came before it. It'll bring together local business owners, musical acts and residents to celebrate the neighborhood — and the good weather.

But, in honor of its 50th year, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce has made this year's fest special.

For starters, the fest will be in full swing Friday evening for the first time ever. Previously, a small kickoff party was held on Friday evening ahead of a weekend full of festivities.

Then there's the "Miss Andersonville" beauty pageant,  a fest tradition from 1965 to 1989 that made a comeback this year. The winner will be announced Sunday during the 16 Candles performance.

The chamber even dug up a trove of vintage photographs from past years and put them on display in the windows of local storefronts.

The outfits may have changed over the years, but the joy on people's faces proves that celebrating your neighborhood never goes out of style.

For a full schedule of entertainment, including JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound and 16 Candles, visit the chamber's website.

Midsommarfest takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Clark Street from Foster to Catalpa avenues.
