HYDE PARK — Learn to make a perfect Japanese scribble at a free workshop at the Smart Museum of Art on Thursday.

The museum at 5550 S. Greenwood Ave. will host free lessons on drawing on scrolls with sumi ink, create signature seals and other activities from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The workshop culminates in painting a collaborative screen using giant brush strokes.

Chicagoans got their first real dose of Japanese culture during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Hyde Park. That culture persists in the neighborhood with much of Smart Museum’s collection of Japanese art on display for the “Objects and Voices” exhibition.

The workshop is free and open to the public.
