Columbus Park Speed Camera Takes About $2,800 Per Day from Austin Drivers

CHICAGO — A speed camera in Columbus Park was the city's ninth-highest earner out of all speed cameras citywide, data shows.

The camera at 5816 W. Jackson Blvd. raked in more than $1.3 million from December 2013 through April 2, 2015, an average of about $2,800 a day.

Austin's two other speed cameras, at 515 S. Central Ave. and 506. S. Central Ave., brought in $51,390 and $48,725, respectively, since May 2014.

The highest-earning speed cameras in all of Chicago were in the Washington Park, West Pullman and East Side neighborhoods, with the highest earner bringing in more than $3.1 million for the city.

Speed cameras in Chicago can issue $35 tickets for motorists going 6 to 10 mph over the speed limit (but are currently only ticketing those going 10 over), and $100 tickets for those going 11 or more mph over the speed limit. First-time offenders get a warning.

For Austin's speed cameras:

• The Columbus Park camera gave out 22,442 warnings, 2,906 $35 violations and 12,060 $100 violations

• The Columbus Park camera averaged about 81 violations per day

• The cameras at 515 S. Central Ave. and 506 S. Central Ave. saw a combined 1,038 warnings, 289 $35 violations and 900 $100 violations

• The 515 S. Central Ave. and 506 S. Central Ave. cameras averaged a combined 10 violations per day, taking in about $476 per day
