EDGEWATER — As more Chicagoans are expected to move into high Red, Purple and Brown Line service areas, the CTA announced it will be gathering public feedback to help decide the future overhauls of four existing North Side stations.

A series of meetings will also serve as a place to discuss the results of preliminary environmental assessments — documents that detail the findings of studies looking at the various ways the project could affect communities.

Among those seeing complete overhauls are Edgewater's Bryn Mawr and Berwyn stations, as well as Uptown's Argyle and Lawrence Red Line stations.

On Thursday, May 14, residents interested in learning more about the project spanning from Lawrence to Bryn Mawr can attend a public meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Broadway Armory in Edgewater, 5917 N. Broadway.

Hard copies of the environmental assessment reports can be found at:

  • Bezazian Library, 1226 W. Ainslie St., Chicago
  • Uptown Library, 929 W. Buena Ave., Chicago
  • Edgewater Library, 6000 N. Broadway, Chicago
  • Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St., Chicago

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning predicts about 185,000 new residents will move into these main service stations by the year 2040, in areas that Chicago Transit Authority representatives say have already reached capacity.

In order to meet the growing demand, the CTA has been undertaking a massive infrastructre overhaul, including modernizing some stations that haven't seen updates in over 100 years.

Among some of the upgrades are bigger platforms, the addition of rail tracks, additional support structures, more benches and other updates that would make stations accessible to all customers.

“This transformational, once-in-a-generation project will bring critical infrastructure and station improvements to the Red Line, which is Chicago’s backbone and our busiest line, and allow us to increase train service as ridership continues to grow,” said CTA President Forrest Claypool. “The Red and Purple Modernization Program will lead to tangible benefits for the entire region, with faster and more reliable service for generations to come.”

The project is slated to be completed in two phases, during which time the CTA says the Red Line will remain open and funtional to riders, but with some temporary closures.

The CTA said it is now also accepting written comments through May 29, which can be sent by email to LawrenceToBrynMawr@transitchicago.com, or mailed to:
