BEVERLY — Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) will be soon be inducted into the same hall of fame as Chris Chelios, Simeon Rice and Donovan McNabb.

O'Shea joins these famous Chicago athletes as members of the Mount Carmel High School Hall of Fame on May 1. O'Shea graduated from the school at 6410 S. Dante Ave. in 1987.

"I was blown away," said O'Shea, adding that he received the news on Jan. 27.

He'll be inducted into the hall of fame alongside seven other Mount Carmel graduates. The Woodlawn school will also honor Michael Hughes, a 1958 graduate, as its Man of the Year.

Hughes is the chairman and founder of Huen Electric, one of the top electrical contracting firms in the Chicago area, said Craig Ferguson, Mount Carmel's alumni director and hockey coach.

The latest group of hall of fame inductees will be honored at the 79th annual alumni banquet at 6:30 p.m. May 1 at Mount Carmel. Tickets cost $80. About 600 people are expected to attend, including more than 100 graduates from the Caravan's class of 1965, Ferguson said.

The honoree' pictures will be added to the west wall of the corridor in the advancement office. Graduates of the all-boys, Catholic school who have achieved success in business, sports, industry and, in O'Shea's case, public service are all on display.

O'Shea was first elected as alderman of the ward that includes Beverly, Mount Greenwood and portions of Morgan Park on Feb. 22, 2011. He was re-elected on Feb. 24.

The lifelong Beverly resident previously worked as an assistant to his predecessor, Ginger Rugai who served as 19th Ward alderman for two decades. He's also worked as a social worker in the Cook County court system, assistant director of operations for Cook County Sheriff Michael Sheahan and director of community programs at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.

"Matt has been a great supporter of Mount Carmel," Ferguson said.
