HYDE PARK — With tumult across the Middle East, K.A.M. Isaiah Israel is calling in experts to explain the history behind what’s happening in Syria, Yemen and other countries in the region.

Over the May 1 weekend, Middle East experts will explain the history of the region and the current struggles during a free lunch event from Bergstein’s Hyde Park Deli at the synagogue, 1100 E. Hyde Park Blvd.

At 7:30 p.m. May 1, Nader Hashemi, the author of “Islam, Secularism and Liberal Democracy: Toward a Democratic Theory for Muslim Societies" and the director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Denver, will talk about the history of the region after World War I.

At 11 a.m. May 2, Hashemi will give a lunchtime lecture about the Arab spring and the rise of ISIS. He will be joined afterwards by Rami Nashashibi, executive director of the Inner-City Muslim Action Network, for a conversation about the current crisis in Israel and Palestine.

“From the elections in Israel to civil wars in Syria and Yemen to negotiating a pact with Iran, many of the issues in these areas have developed over the past 100 years,” Rabbi Frederick Reeves said. “K.A.M. Isaiah Israel is honored to host two experts who know so much about the facets of the issues in the region.”

Reservations are required and can be made by visiting www.kamii.org/rsvp or by calling 773-924-1234 by April 28.
