DOWNTOWN — An exit poll of voters going to the polls Tuesday for the Chicago mayoral election revealed that those who thought finances were a priority tended to vote to re-elect Rahm Emanuel.
The exit poll by Edison Research for CBS2 of 1,500 voters found that of those mostly concerned with the city's financial situation, 70 percent voted to Emanuel while 30 percent voted for Jesus "Chuy" Garcia.
The city's unfunded pension liability has been pegged at $32 billion while Gov. Bruce Rauner is cutting state monies to the city. Emanuel's campaign portrayed Garcia as not up to the task of fixing the problem.
The vote for those who said crime was a priority was a little closer: 63 percent for Emanuel and 37 percent for Garcia.
Rahm was favored by black survey participants and whites. Garcia was favored by Hispanics.
The exit pollers also asked about red light cameras, the economy and the city's future.
