UPTOWN — The head chef of an Uptown restaurant that's become an up-and-coming culinary star won an honor of his own Tuesday.

Jake Bickelhaupt, who runs the kitchen at 42 Grams, was named one of the best new chefs in the country by Food & Wine magazine Tuesday.

Bickelhaupt, who also owns the restaurant with his wife Alexa, represents Chicago on the list of the country's 10 most innovative, up-and-coming cooks.

According to Food & Wine magazine, the Chicago chef "has created an 18-seat, tasting-menu-only restaurant that's like an elegant but unpretentious dinner party." Plus, he's an "alum of some of the country's most forward-thinking restaurants," including Schwa, Alinea and Chicago's Charlie Trotter's.

The restaurant's quintessential dish? Cultured barley porridge with pig heart, crispy jowl and pine syrup.

This isn't the first accolade for 42 Grams. In its first year of business, which was last year, the high-end restaurant received two Michelin stars.

The latest recognition means Bickelhaupt and the other nine winners will be featured in the July issue of Food & Wine and will participate in a showcase at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen this summer.
