MOUNT GREENWOOD — A report of an attempted abduction of a child in Mount Greenwood proved to be unfounded after police investigated the incident, Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) said.

The report said a man driving a black SUV attempted to lure a child into his vehicle on Sunday in the 10700 block of South Spaulding Avenue by asking for help finding his lost cat.

As it turns out, the man truly lost his cat, O'Shea said.

O'Shea said he had been hesitant to put out a community alert until the investigation confirmed the threat.

"You are always walking that fine line of warning people without causing a panic," O'Shea said.

The alderman said if nothing else he hopes word of the incident sparked conversations between parents and children, warning them of other potential threats.
