HYDE PARK — The DuSable Museum of African American History is finding plenty of people from its own neighborhood to honor during the 20th annual Night of 100 Stars gala.
Among those to be honored with the DuSable Museum History Makers Award, which celebrates African-Americans making an outstanding contribution to society, are a Phillips High School quarterback and a Hollywood actress who got her start at the University of Chicago Laboratory School.
Dewayne Collins, a senior at Phillips and the Wildcats’ quarterback and team captain, will be the youngest to receive the award at the March 28 gala.
Salli Richardson Whitfield, an actress from “The Great White Hype,” “I am Legend” and the HBO show “Newsroom,” will also receive the honor. Whitfield got her start in acting at Kuumba Theater and as a student at the University of Chicago Laboratory School.
Also being honored are Walter Massey, the president of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Toni Preckwinkle, the Cook County Board president; and Dr. Ian Smith, the author of “Shred: The Revolutionary Diet.”
Tickets for the black-tie gala at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Drive, are $400.
