Koval's 'Womanhattan' Cocktail Aims To Strike a Blow Against Sexism

RAVENSWOOD — Hey y'all, it's the first TGIF of Women's History Month: time to get our drink on.

Let's toast with the "Womanhattan."

This spin on the classic Manhattan was created by Koval Distillery to accompany co-owner Sonat Birnecker's interview with the online magazine The Riveter (tagline: Riveting Storytelling by Women). It was founded by a bunch of female journalism school grads in 2012 who were angry that not a single woman was nominated for a national magazine award that year.

During the Q&A, Birnecker talked about the stereotype of whiskey and distilling as a masculine field and confided that a "very important magazine" had once taken a quote of hers and attributed it to her husband.

Kind of like how in March, the biggest holiday during Women's History Month celebrates a dude — St. Patrick — and the country literally comes to a screeching halt for a men's basketball tournament.

Madness, indeed.

How about we put down the pints of Guinness, press pause on ESPN, and put our hands together in a rousing slow-clap for Sacagawea, Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Joan Didion, Sally Ride, Julia Child, Serena Williams, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Aretha Franklin, Elizabeth Warren, Oprah, Mom and Sonat Birnecker?

Then pour yourself a double Womanhattan, ladies.

The recipe: 2 ounces Koval Millet Whiskey, ½ ounce Carpano Antica (the original vermouth), 2 dashes walnut bitters.
