A Deeper Look at the Most Disproportionately Popular Foods in Your 'Hood

CHICAGO — Recently, we asked Yelp to crunch its database to see what cuisine each of Chicago's neighborhoods should be known for.

What Yelp gave us was a list of the most disproportionately popular cuisines by neighborhood. That doesn't mean the most popular restaurant type in the neighborhood, but restaurant types that have the highest concentration in the neighborhood when compared with the city as a whole.

They did it this way:

• First, they looked at all the restaurants in Chicago and broke them down by cuisine types. The company figured out what percentage of Chicago's restaurants were Chinese, pizza, burgers, etc.

• Second, they did the same thing for every Chicago neighborhood. Some of the neighborhoods didn't have enough restaurants to produce valid data.

• Third, they gave us the numbers comparing the neighborhood percentages to the city's percentages. That's what you'll see in the map below:
