HYDE PARK — Kenwood Academy has started planning its move into the former Canter Middle School building.

Chicago Public Schools closed the middle school at 4959 S. Blackstone Ave. in 2014 and announced that neighboring Kenwood Academy would take over the facility.

Kenwood will hold its next meeting about reusing the shuttered middle school at 5 p.m. Feb. 10 before the 6 p.m. local school council meeting at Kenwood, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave.

When CPS announced in 2014 the handover of the former middle school, Kenwood Principal Greg Jones was tasked with figuring out how to move the school’s 135-student academic center 60 yards across the parking lot into the Canter building.

Canter, which is built to accommodate 390 students, was marked for closure in 2013 because enrollment had dipped to 228 students. Kenwood at the time was overenrolled, expecting 1,750 students in a building meant to handle 1,646 students.

A incubation year for the academic center operating in Canter is expected to be up and running at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.
