CHICAGO — Two police officers, including one running for 38th Ward alderman, were injured in a car crash late Saturday night in Portage Park.

Around 11:55 p.m. Saturday, two police officers were traveling eastbound on Irving Park Road in a marked squad SUV responding to an emergency call when they were struck by a sedan traveling southbound on Melvina Avenue, according to Officer Janel Sedevic.

The officers then struck a light pole before coming to a stop. Photos from the scene show a crumpled police SUV caved in upon itself.

They were both taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, Sedevic said.

One of the injured officers is Mike Keeney, a Jefferson Park District officer who is running to replace Ald. Tim Cullerton as the 38th Ward's representative, a police source said. Keeney is undergoing testing and observation, the source said.

The other injured officer may undergo surgery after sustaining a fractured neck and back, the source said. One of the officers was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle is in good condition after being transported to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, Sedevic said, adding that the driver has been issued a ticket for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
