Off-Duty Sergeant Kills Man Pointing Gun at Mt. Greenwood Bar Patrons

CHICAGO — An off-duty Chicago Police sergeant shot and killed a man who was pointing a gun at patrons of a Mt. Greenwood bar Sunday, police said.

A police statement said the off-duty police sergeant was in the 11000 block of South Spaulding Avenue when he saw a man shoot another man. A police source said the suspect was attempting to rob a bar.

The sergeant drew his gun, told the gunman he was the police and told him to drop his gun. The gunman ignored the order, and pointed his gun at other patrons and the sergeant. That's when the sergeant shot him, police said.

The gunman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Thomas McGinty, of the 10300 block of St. Louis Avenue. According to the autopsy, the 45-year-old man died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.

On Saturday night, Chicago police critically wounded an armed man after a foot chase. On Sunday afternoon, a Drug Enforcement Agency officers shot a man after he ran an agent over, causing a head injury.
