LINCOLN SQUARE — A dozen of Chicago's top performing schools are located in the North Side neighborhoods of Lincoln Square, North Center, Irving Park, Albany Park and North Park, according to new district ratings released this week.

Neighborhood schools scored high marks as Chicago Public Schools unveiled its latest quality ratings, the first under a new five-tier system.

The new policy replaces the previous system — in which schools were rated Level 1 (outstanding), Level 2 (good) or Level 3 (poor) — with Levels 1+, 1, 2+, 2 and 3. Student attendance, academic growth and school culture are now factored into the quality ratings in addition to test scores, according to a statement from CPS.

High schools, for example, earn points for the percentage of freshman on track to graduate in four years and for college enrollment of graduates.

Schools at a 2+ or above are considered in "good standing," meaning they meet or exceed CPS performance expectations. Level 2 schools require targeted support to keep moving in the right direction. A Level 3 rating calls for intensive support and actions that could include replacing the principal, turnaround or new LSC elections.
