CHICAGO — As a result of an explosion at a Morgan Park home that killed a family dog, People's Gas will be shutting off service to nearby residences to repair a damaged main, the company announced Wednesday.

People's Gas will shut off the gas to a total of 52 nearby residences beginning 9 a.m. Thursday; the company expects that repairs will take five or six hours.

The gas company is working with Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) to contact all of the affected residents.

The Morgan Park home, 2148 W. 107th Place, owned by Sutherland Elementary School teacher Darlene Sheahan, exploded early Tuesday after crews were working to install a new water main on the street. The family dog, a Labradoodle named Molly, was killed in the blaze. There were no other injuries.

After the explosion, People's Gas crews worked throughout the day and into late evening Tuesday, according to a company alert.

"Unfortunately, People's Gas could not finalize repairs [Tuesday] night due to further damage discovered during the investigation."

During the service suspension, affected residents may smell natural gas in the air, the company warned. Residents should call People's Gas at 866-556-6002 to report any odor or gas in or around their home.

Once repairs are completed, People's Gas must be able to enter the homes in order to restore service, the alert said. Someone 18 years or older must be home.
