WICKER PARK — An Aldi supermarket on the border of Wicker Park and Bucktown was closed Tuesday morning following an overnight burglary that also resulted in an alarm loudly blaring for several hours nonstop.

Sometime between 1:50 and 3 a.m., two offenders pried open a back door and stole computer equipment and "an unknown amount of cash" before fleeing from the Aldi at 1767 N. Milwaukee Ave., said Officer Tom Sweeney, a police spokesman.

Shakespeare District police responded to the call around 6 a.m. after an employee called in and said that the store was burglarized.

Area North Detectives are investigating, Sweeney said.

Around 10 a.m., several shoppers were standing outside of the store, bewildered by the closure and the blaring alarm. A Walsh Construction worker who had been parked at the lot since 6 a.m. as part of nearby Bloomingdale Trail bridge work said the alarm had been going off since that time.

A sign in the window said that the store apologized for the inconvenience and would be reopening at noon.

An Aldi spokeswoman declined to comment on the incident, citing an ongoing investigation.

Long a staple at the Milwaukee and Leavitt intersection, Aldi underwent a significant remodeling two years ago.

Local developers Centrum properties are currently working on trying to buy the one-story building and are hoping to bring a 7-story, 128-unit apartment complex to the site at 1759-67 N. Milwaukee Ave, which would also be anchored by an Aldi.
