BUCKTOWN — A pop-up holiday shop in Bucktown, which is showcasing handmade items by local and international artisans who receive fair wages and use sustainable materials, is celebrating "Fair Tuesday."

Scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at 2031 N. Damen Ave., Chicago Fair Trade's Fair Tuesday Happy Hour will include free wine, beer and chocolate, as well as a chance to shop for ornaments, jewelry, purses, cooking oils, coffee and more gifts.

A worldwide ethical shopping movement formed in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the goal of #FairTuesday is to "inspire conscious consumerism and show how an everyday purchase can change lives in a whole community," according to the Fair Tuesday website.

Though Chicago Fair Trade's holiday shop just opened on Black Friday, so far American Girl doll clothing made in Guatemala has been popular with customers, along with ornaments, said Katherine Bissell Cordova, Chicago Fair Trade's executive director.

Located in the former Violette shoe store, which closed almost two years ago, Cordova said she selected the location, just north of the Armitage and Damen avenues intersection, because there are currently no fair trade stores in Bucktown.

"We also found a really nice landlord who was willing to work with us for just one month," Cordova said.

Twenty-one vendors are exhibiting wares in the store, including Mata Traders, Greenheart, which used to operate a shop on Wicker Park's Division Street before moving to Old Town, Maggie's Organics and Greenola Style.

Chicago Fair Trade Holiday Pop-Up Shop, 2031 N. Damen Ave. Hours are noon-7 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays; noon-5 p.m. Sundays. The shop, which will close on Dec. 24. is closed most Mondays but will be open from noon-7 p.m. on Dec. 22. Phone: 312-212-1760.
