NORTH CENTER — Bottles & Cans has come up with an adults-only riff on the advent calendar, one that's most definitely not safe for Sunday school.
Instead of counting down to Christmas by opening little windows that reveal pictures of nativity scenes or a semi-edible chocolate, the North Center shop's version is actually a basket of beers — 25 bottles individually wrapped and numbered, or enough surprise ales to get you through each day of the holiday season between Dec. 1 and Christmas Day.
Patty Wetli you can choose hoppy, dark, or a mix of beers:
Considering that advent calendars have been around for nearly 200 years, can we just say, it's about time.
The calendars, which cost $75 plus tax, can be ordered by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and are available for pick-up only at the shop 4109 N. Lincoln Ave.
Customers have their choice of one of three options: hoppy, dark or a mix of the two.
Bottles & Cans staff is picking the brews to keep the process as straightforward as possible, according to Carly Katz, who owns the shop with her husband Joe.
Credit goes to Joe for the "Eureka!" moment, said his wife.
"He came into the shop and said, 'I have a great idea,'" she said. "And then I have to figure out how to make it work."
And aren't we glad she did.
