CHICAGO — A suburban man was ordered held without bail Thursday for shooting an off-duty Chicago Police officer and her daughter Tuesday night in South Shore, prosecutors said

Anthony Gates, 28, of Riverdale, was charged with two felony counts of attempted murder and two felony counts of aggravated battery after he was identified as the shooter in the incident, police said.

Around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, Gates showed up at the home of his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend in the 2200 block of East 68th Street wanting to see their 2-year-old son, prosecutors said in court Thursday. Gates, who has a history of domestic violence against the woman, was upset because he thought he wasn't seeing the boy enough and thought the woman was seeing a new man, prosecutors said.

After Gates confronted the woman's dad, the woman and the boy drove up in a car driven by the woman's mom, a 46-year-old off-duty Chicago Police officer, prosecutors said. Gates then confronted his ex-girlfriend before going back to his car, getting a handgun and then opening fire on the off-duty officer, prosecutors said — even as his young son walked by him.

Gates fired at the woman some 10 times, hitting her in her face and upper body, prosecutors said. When she tried to climb out of the car to escape, he stood over her and continued to shoot her, prosecutors said.

He then turned and shot at his ex-girlfriend, hitting her in the leg, before running up to her and hitting her, prosecutors said. She was able to escape

Gates then drove off with his son, who was found safe 3½ hours later at a relative's home, prosecutors said. Gates was also nabbed at the relative's home, where police found a 9mm handgun in his car, prosecutors said.

The police officer remained in critical condition at Northwestern University with wounds in her face, knee and both her wrists, prosecutors said. Her daughter was taken to Northwestern, where she was treated for a gunshot wound in her leg and released, police said.
