LAKEVIEW — Police have amped up their presence near Lake View High School after shots were fired during a nearby gang altercation Monday night.

Officers were called to the 1400 block of West Warner Avenue late Monday after multiple 911 calls reported shots fired in the area, according to Town Hall Police Cmdr. Elias Voulgaris.

No one was injured, but police collected 10 9mm bullet casings on the street, which sits about two blocks from Lake View High School.

Voulgaris said the incident stemmed from a long-standing gang feud between Latin Eagles and Spanish Gangster Disciples.

"In the two years I've been here [in the Town Hall district], I've never heard of them," Voulgaris said Wednesday night a community policing meeting. But years ago, "there was a gang feud between Latin Eagles and the Spanish Gangster Disciples around Lake View [High School] and in Lakeview itself.

"There's pretty much been zero activity there, but lately we've had some incidents and we think it might be tied in to that location again — old rivalries flaring up. We're trying to put a stop to it."

Police arrested four people Monday night, Voulgaris said. The first was an admitted Latin Eagle gang member who lives in west suburban Melrose Park. He told police that he was shot at by a Spanish Gangster Disciple.

None of the four people arrested lives in the area.

Voulgaris said he's added a tactical unit to the area to augment beat patrols near Lake View High School, 4015 N. Ashland Ave. He plans to meet with Principal Scott Grens next week.

"We want to look [if there are] any students involved in this," Voulgaris said.

None of the people arrested attended or graduated from the high school, Voulgaris said. Police are investigating whether they have children or relatives there.
