CHICAGO — One man was killed and three people were hospitalized after the facade of a building collapsed Saturday afternoon in West Lawn.

Fire crews arrived at a commercial building in the 4100 block of West 63rd Street around 1 p.m., said Will Knight, a Fire Department spokesman.

Four construction workers were working on the roof when the facade of a one-story building had partially collapsed, injuring three people, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police spokesman.

A 44-year-old man was taken to Holy Cross with minor injuries. A 41-year-old man refused treatment. Two men, a 30- and a 44-year old man, were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with serious injuries. The 44-year-old later died, Zala said.

Roberto Topia-Gonzalez, 44, of the 2500 block of South Homan Avenue, was identified as the man who was killed. An autopsy determined he died of multiple injuries caused by a falling brick wall.

Representatives from the Building's Department and Alderman's Officer were present and the scene and the building owner was cited for not having appropriate permit for the construction work, Zala said.
