PORTAGE PARK — An exhibit at the National Veterans Art Museum that depicts the horror of war will end its run Saturday.
"Earth Lies Screaming,” a 47-foot-long, 12-foot-high sculpture, and "Atomic Skull" by Korean War veteran Jim Leedy are the focus of the “Surrealism and War" exhibit at the National Veterans Art Museum, 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Both works were bought by the Rabb Family Foundation in an effort to keep both in Chicago, said Lionel Rabb, the head of the foundation and the chairman of the museum's board of directors.
The exhibit, which also features work from veterans of the Vietnam War as well as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, explores the relationship between surrealism and the experience of war.
The exhibit also included a workshop, dubbed "Occupation," from Gulf War veteran and ceramic artist Ehren Tool, who made hundreds of cups for and about veterans. Saturday is the last day for the cups to be picked up.
The museum will be closed Sunday through Nov. 10 for the installation of the "100 Faces of War Experience" exhibit, which depicts demographically accurate portraits of Americans who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan.
