CHICAGO — A man was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in South Austin.

Around 2:35 p.m. Wednesday, the man, 41, was standing inside the hallway of a building in the first block of North Lorel Avenue when someone opened fire, striking him in the back, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene, Estrada said.

The man was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Pierre Peters, and said he lived in the basement of the building where he was killed.

Detectives are investigating, and no one is in custody.

No further information was immediately available.
