CHICAGO — Police shot a man who fired at officers in the Back of the Yards late Wednesday evening, police said

The incident happened around 11 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Wood Street, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Police officers in the Deering District were conducting a traffic stop when they saw two men shooting at each other from opposite sides of the street, according to a police statement.

When the officers approached one of the men, he fired a handgun at an officer, so the officer shot back and hit the man, police said.

The man, whose age is unknown, was transported to an area hospital, according to a police statement.

The second shooter was not in custody.

Police officers, none of whom were injured during the shooting, recovered a gun on the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is currently investigating this incident.
