HYDE PARK — A roll call with officers from the Grand Crossing Police District turned into an after-hours photo shoot Wednesday at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Sgt. Yolanda Irvin said the original plan was to get officers together with community members who were court advocates and served on the minister’s alliance for a photo on the steps of the museum.

“A lot of people didn’t even know the museum is in the district,” Irvin said.

Setting up the event, the museum offered to stay open late so officers and neighbors could come into the rotunda for a photo in front of the planes and train.

“We’re happy to host them and the men and women of the neighborhood,” said Lisa Miner, a spokeswoman for the museum. “We’re thrilled, they’re great to work with and they take good care of us.”

Supt. Garry McCarthy also dropped in to make sure he was standing next to district Cmdr. James Jones for a group photo.

Watching McCarthy pull Jones aside after the photo, officers on from the steps of the museum said they thought the superintendent’s presence showed ongoing support for Jones.

McCarthy has twice promoted Jones, first from captain to acting commander of the Harrison District and then again in March to commander of the Grand Crossing District, a move that was criticized by many residents who liked the previous commander.
