CHICAGO — A man was fatally shot in Englewood early Saturday.

Around 1 a.m., the man, 24, was opening the door of an apartment vestibule in the 6700 block of South Throop Street when a man came out and opened fire, according to Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

When officers arrived to the scene, they found the man dead, Lemmon said.

It is unclear if he was going inside or coming out of the apartment, she added.

The victim was identified as Genorel Martin, of the 6700 block of South Throop Avenue, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:12 a.m.

Police said Martin was a documented gang member.

No further information was immediately available.
