COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — After spending Sept. 7 boating on Lake Michigan, an off-duty Harvey police officer returned to his car, parked off Lake Shore Drive, to discover a group of people sitting on it and hanging out, prosecutors said.
When the cop told them to get lost, some started lobbing threats at the officer, prosecutors said at a court hearing Wednesday.
Standing near his open driver's side door, in the 5900 block of South Lake Shore Drive, the victim identified himself as a police officer. Still the group allegedly continued to threaten him.
The officer pulled his service handgun and fired it, prosecutors said. But the group refused to back off.
They attacked the man, stomping him until he lost consciousness, prosecutors said. He awoke a short time later to find himself alone, his gun and badge stolen.
The cop identified Alexander Greene, 19, of the 1900 block of West Garfield Avenue, as one of his attackers after Greene was picked up on an unrelated domestic battery case, prosecutors said.
According to a police report, the Harvey officer did not seek any medical attention for injuries sustained in the attack.
During a brief court hearing Wednesday, a Cook County judge ordered Greene held on $250,000 bail.
