CHICAGO — An Indiana man accused of shooting a Chicago Police officer in the head during a standoff Tuesday killed a man and shot another officer during the fracas, authorities said Thursday.

Daniel Brown, 42, of Indianapolis was charged after Tuesday's shooting in Englewood left two officers wounded and another man dead, said Supt. Garry McCarthy during a press conference Thursday.

Brown was charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and another count of aggravated battery.

Brown was wanted in connection with the shooting of three people in separate incidents over the weekend in Indianapolis when police converged on a home in Englewood, McCarthy said.

During a press conference Thursday, Supt. Garry McCarthy discussed charges filed against Daniel Brown who allegedly shot and wounded two officers Tuesday.

The shooting happened at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when officers tried to arrest a man wanted for multiple shooting in Indiana. When officers arrived, someone began shooting from a window in the home in the 7200 block of South Lowe Avenue in Englewood.

As police approached the home, Brown allegedly fired, striking Capt. Ed Kulbida, 58, a 29-year veteran, in the head above the eyebrow, and in the shoulder.

Kublida was transported to Stroger Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. He was treated and released Thursday afternoon.

"Either one of the bullets could have killed him," McCarthy said.

Another man, Daniel Jackson, 42, was killed during Tuesday's shooting. Brown was the triggerman, McCarthy said.

"Evidence suggests Brown may be responsible for Jackson's death," McCarthy said.

According to McCarthy, the 40-mm caliber pistol used in the shootings was legally purchased in Indiana by Brown's girlfriend in 2012.

"This is another example that fits that pattern of store purchases that lead to violence in Chicago streets. It happens time and again where a convicted felon gets his girlfriend or family member to purchase a gun for them because they can't do it legally," McCarthy said.

A second officer was wounded in the exchange, McCarthy said. The officer, a detective, realized he was shot after returning home from a 36-hour shift. An X-ray showed a bullet fragment in his upper leg, McCarthy said. The detective was treated and released from an area hospital, McCarthy added.

The detective was helping Kulbida after Kublida was shot, McCarthy said.

Brown is due to appear in court Friday.
