NEAR WEST SIDE — Despite being shot twice, including once in the head, a Chicago Police captain is in "good spirits" late Tuesday, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said outside of Stroger Hospital.

The wounded officer, a captain in the Englewood district, was shot in his head and shoulder, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. A hospital spokeswoman said the officer was in serious condition.

The captain was hit above his eyebrow, but the bullet exited near his temple. It was described as a graze wound.

Police said the shooting happened at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when officers tried to arrest a man wanted for multiple shooting in Indiana. When officers arrived, someone began shooting from a window in the home in the 7200 block of South Lowe in Englewood.

Bullets hit the captain, a 58-year-old man who has been on the force for 29 years.

As the night progressed, both Pat Camden, spokesman for Fraternal Order of Police, and McCarthy said the captain was in good condition.

"The most important thing is that he's in great spirits, he's surrounded by his family, and he's going to be OK," McCarthy said.

"I don't know if he was ever in serious condition," said Camden.

The injured captain has 146 departmental awards and seven department commendations under his belt, police said.

CPD scanner: "Officer down ... They're still shooting at police."

The apartment complex where the shooting occurred has a "complex layout," he said, and it took police a while to get civilians out of the building.

The wounded captain won't need surgery, McCarthy said.

Other officers at the scene were pinned down by a shooter when they tried to leave the building, according to the Tribune.

Officers from the Englewood district and surrounding districts came to assist those at the scene, according to the Tribune. Dispatch reports said a police SWAT team was called.

At this point, all civilians have been removed and the scene is secure, but there still may be two people "holed up" in the the apartment, McCarthy said.

Dispatcher: "They're still shooting out of the window."
