WEST ENGLEWOOD — Local school council members said among the topics to be discussed at its meeting this week is the ongoing principal search at Earle STEM Elementary School.

The public meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Earle STEM, 2040 W. 62nd St., where parents will be updated about the search being conducted by Chicago Public Schools.

Ald. JoAnn Thompson (16th), whose ward includes Earle, said parents should be patient and give CPS a chance to select the right person for the job.

Interim Principal Demetrius Hobson resigned in August after eight months, and, in December, former Principal Ketesha Melendez was reassigned to Crispus Attucks Elementary School in Bronzeville.

Betty Smith is the interim principal until a new principal is hired, said CPS officials.

"CPS is currently going through a process to evaluate candidates for the principal position at Earle STEM," said Bill McCaffrey, a CPS spokesman. "While the selection process is ongoing, the Local School Councils' feedback will be incorporated in the proposal that will ultimately be brought to the CEO [Barbara Byrd-Bennett]."

The last two scheduled school council meetings this year at Earle will be at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.
