WEST ENGLEWOOD — For the second time this year, the future of Earle STEM Elementary School's principal is in dispute.

Chicago Public Schools officials said Friday that Demetrius Hobson had resigned as interim principal of Earle, 2040 W. 62nd St.

But Hobson, whom DNAinfo Chicago reached while on vacation, said that is not true.

"I never submitted a letter of resignation to CPS. This is the first time I am hearing this," he said.

On Tuesday CPS officials clarified its statement and said, "Hobson has indicated to CPS that he plans to resign and we expect to receive his official resignation letter by the end of this week. Meanwhile, the district has begun the process to find his replacement."

Hobson would not say whether he would resign this week.

The new school year starts next month and CPS officials did not know when a new principal for Earle, which has been on academic probation for 11 years, would be hired.

Unlike his predecessor, Ketesha Melendez, CPS officials said Hobson, who was hired in January, would not be reassigned to another school since he is resigning as a school district employee.

Last December Melendez was reassigned to Crispus Attucks Elementary School in Bronzeville even though the school district originally said she had not been reassigned to Attucks.
