University of Chicago Hospital to Offer 500 Free Heart Screenings

HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago will attempt to check 500 patients for heart problems over the next year at free weekly screenings.

Every Saturday starting Oct. 4 at the Center for Care and Discovery, 5700 S. Maryland Ave., the university will offer 20-minute ultrasounds and to check patients for cardiovascular and vascular issues.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in America and accounts 600,000 deaths per year, according to the university.

The program, called Dare to Care, will kick off with a special set of heart screenings at 4 p.m. Sept. 25 with university professor Neil Shubin, host of the PBS show "Your Inner Fish," and Mike Huff, announcer for the Chicago White Sox.
