NORTH CENTER — With the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 years averaging nearly $250,000 — not including college tuition — pinching pennies is no joke.

St. Benedict's annual baby and kids garage sale, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, can help parents shave a few bucks off that quarter-million dollar tally, with loads of gently used items for sale at a fraction of their original price.

Pick up clothes, toys, sports equipment, furniture, books, strollers, Halloween costumes and more. There's even maternity wear for expectant moms who want to get a head start on economizing.

Admission is $1 from 8-11:30 a.m. A final "power hour" from noon-1 p.m., when all remaining merchandise is 50 percent off, is free.

The garage sale will be held in the gym at St. Ben's school, 3941 N. Bell St.
