Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Hitting Police Officer With His Car

CHICAGO — An Austin man was charged Monday after allegedly striking a police officer with his car in West Town.

Denzel Ford, 20, of the 800 block of North Central Avenue, was charged with one felony count of first degree attempted murder, along with two felony counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, one felony count of aggravated battery and one felony count of possession of a control substance, according to Chicago Police

During a narcotics investigation, police attempted to place Ford under arrest for allegedly selling narcotics on the 2300 block of West Lake Avenue. After refusing police orders, Ford accelerated his car, striking the officer's vehicle and knocking the officer down, police said in a written statement.

While the officer lay injured on the ground, Ford accelerated his car toward the officer. The officer opened fire, striking Ford.

According to the statement, Ford was transported to an area hospital. The officer was taken to an area hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at Central Bond Court.
