HYDE PARK — South Side salsa makers are getting a chance to back up their big talk at a salsa-making contest at Tomato Fest on Saturday.

Starting at 9 a.m., the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Drive, will host a salsa contest as part of the first-ever Tomato Fest.

The fest will offer lessons on making ketchup and sun-dried tomatoes for gardeners who are burdened with an over-productive summer crop.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own tomatoes to trade with other gardeners for seeds and supper.

Farmers will also lead workshops on how to save tomato seeds to plant next year.

The festival is free and open to the public.
