CHATHAM — Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th) is kicking off his re-election campaign this weekend.

Sawyer, whose ward includes Chatham and portions of Englewood, is hosting a community gathering from 1-6 p.m. Saturday outside his ward office, 8005 S. King Drive. Barbecue and music will be provided, and Sawyer said he'll be available to meet with voters individually.

"This event is my way of thanking the community for their support," Sawyer said. "I invite everyone to come out and have a good time."

If re-elected to a second term, Sawyer said he planned to focus on attracting new businesses to the ward, improving the ward's infrastructure and increasing transparency in city government.

Since Aug. 1, the 51-year-old alderman has set up a satellite office every Friday at a local business from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as a way to "to bring the ward office to residents and give them easier access to me," Sawyer said.

On Friday, he will hold his final "Alderman in Your Area" event at the St. Columbanus Church, 331 E. 71st St.
