WEST PULLMAN — The Jackie Robinson West baseball team will make an appearance at a back-to-school rally at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sheldon Heights Church of Christ, 11325 S. Halsted St.

Members of the team that won the U.S. championship in the Little League World Series will be signing autographs, including player Joshua Houston and his dad, assistant coach Jerry Houston, who are members of the church.

"Mr. Houston and his family stopped by the church [Monday] after the welcome home party at Jackie Robinson Park to say hello and confirmed the team would be attending our school rally," church spokeswoman Cheryl Hunt said. "The family have been members of Sheldon Heights for years and regularly attend worship service every Sunday."

The Rev. Leonardo Gilbert, pastor of the church, said he was glad to see the family return safely from traveling and said Josh is a fine representation of the children that attend the church.

"I've known him his whole life and he is growing up to be a fine, young man thanks to his upbringing by his parents, who have made Christ a vital part of their parenting," Gilbert said.

Gilbert added that the purpose of the back-to-school event is to get students and parents more engaged in the community. The event is part of the church's Friends and Family Day weekend, which ends Sunday with 11 a.m. worship service.
