CHICAGO — A man was fatally struck by a car while riding his bicycle near Midway Airport early Sunday.

Around 12:45 a.m., the man, 44, was riding his bike eastbound on 55th Street when he was struck by a 2011 Chevy Impala at the intersection of 55th Street and Central Avenue, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman.

The man was initially taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead, said Lemmon.

He was identified as Gary Reyes of Park Forest, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The driver of the car was identified as Elizabeth Lara-Salas, 37, of the 6200 block of South Mayfield Avenue, police said.

Lara-Salas was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident; there are no other charges at this time.

Police said the Major Accidents Investigations Unit is investigating the incident.
