NORTH CENTER — North Center isn't exactly uncharted territory — it's been on the map since the late 1800s — but for those who haven't done much exploring in the area to date, a weeklong "Discover Northcenter" promotion offers added incentive to get to know the neighborhood better.

The official kick-off for Discover Northcenter will take place just prior to Wednesday's 7 p.m. summer concert in Town Square, 4100 N. Damen Ave., with the shop-local promotion running through Aug. 20.

"Treasure maps" highlighting the discounts and special services offered by participating businesses during the promotion will be handed out at the kickoff or can be downloaded here. The event will also feature guest grill masters from Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro, who will be collecting their People's Choice trophy from Ribfest.

Roscoe Village? North Center? Patty Wetli and Jon Hansen discuss why North Center has had a tough time getting its name out there:

Among the deals being offered during Discover Northcenter:

  • Free ice cream with any purchase, courtesy of Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro, 3905 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • Twenty percent off sale items at Neighborly, 2003 W. Montrose Ave.
  • Two-for-one tickets to Corn Productions' "Gator Bait," 4210 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • $40 worth of food for $25 at Apart Pizza, 2205 W. Montrose Ave.

Collect "stamps" on your map at each shop visited and bring it to the summer concert on Aug. 20 — or return the document by that same date to the Northcenter Chamber office, 4056 N. Lincoln Ave. — in order to be entered in a drawing for various prizes, including passes to the chamber's next neighborhood restaurant tour.
