LOGAN SQUARE — A new honorary street sign will be set up to commemorate one of Logan Square’s longtime residents this week.

Sophie Dobosz lived on the 2200 block of North Talman Avenue for more than 70 years and made a distinct impression on another longtime neighborhood resident, Robert Castillo.

“Sophie Dobosz was a neighbor of mine growing up … She was our block’s eyes and ears and a great friend to me and my family,” Castillo said.

Talman Avenue from Milwaukee Avenue to Belden Avenue will be designated Sophie Dobosz Way during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday during the annual Talman Block Party.

Dobosz used to work early mornings at the old Chicks Drive-in near the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Prindeville, according to Castillo. She was heavily involved in community safety throughout the 1980s and 1990s and knew many of the Shakespeare District officers, Castillo said.

She was born in 1914 and died in 2013 at age 99.

The honorary designation request was introduced to the City Council on June 24, 2013 and was approved in September. There are more than 1,500 of the brown and green honorary street signs throughout Chicago.
