CHICAGO — Originally built for by Perry H. Smith, who inherited a railroad fortune, a 10,000-square-foot mansion is currently on the market in Gold Coast for $6.5 million.

Some historians call 1400 N. Astor St. the "Perry H. Smith Mansion," but a Wrigley daughter and her husband lived in the home for 50 years, the longest tenure of any resident, according to Baird & Warner's Anthony Adams. As a result, it is also sometimes referred to as the the "Wrigley-Offield Mansion."

Before the home was built, the land was owned by the Archbishop of Chicago, Adams added.

Famed Chicago architects Cobb and Frost designed and built the home in 1886; they are known for designing the Newberry Library, Chicago Federal Building and the Palmer Mansion, to name a few.

In the 1990s, the home was renovated by architecture group Hammond, Beeby & Babka, but many of the original historic details are still intact like the millwork and mahogany paneling, Adams said.

In total, the Victorian home has seven bedrooms and seven full bathrooms. There are many fireplaces throughout, an elevator for easy mobility and a 570-square-foot terrace complete with a gazebo.
